球磨试验是一个成熟的涂层厚度的测量方法。用旋转钢球和研磨液使钢球球冠磨开样品表面涂层进入样品的本底材料。当用显微镜检测时，可见涂层/基体材料显示为一个圆，或在多层涂层中显示一个同心圆的系统。该涂层的厚度可以从这些圆的直径与研磨球的直径代入公式来计算。
此种纯几何方法可以给出高度精确的结果，即使涂层厚度在微米范围内也可精确测量。测量结果可以由软件kaloSOFT和配备有相机的显微镜直接算出。
